A web-based trip feasibility planner that helps users determine whether selected destinations can be reached within a specified time limit and budget.
Can You Get There? — Time & Budget Trip Planner
A web-based trip feasibility application that helps users determine whether they can reach selected destinations within a specified travel-time limit and budget. Users choose a starting location, select destinations directly on an interactive map or from suggested example places, and configure their preferred transportation modes, maximum trip duration, and budget.
The application calculates estimated travel times and costs for each destination, then classifies trips as Possible or Not Possible based on the configured constraints. Results are displayed in a comparison table, allowing users to compare destinations by feasibility, travel time, and estimated cost.
Key Features
- Starting Location Selection: Search for a town, station, or address to define the trip's starting point.
- Destination Selection: Add multiple destinations by clicking the map or selecting example locations.
- Interactive Map: Display the starting point, destinations, and geographic areas associated with the selected places.
- Multiple Transportation Modes: Select supported options such as walking, taxi, train, coach, and rental car.
- Time Constraints: Set the maximum permitted travel duration for a trip.
- Budget Constraints: Define a maximum budget and compare it with each destination's estimated travel cost.
- Trip Feasibility Assessment: Determine whether each destination meets the selected time and budget limits.
- Results Comparison: Display each destination's feasibility status, estimated travel time, and estimated cost in a sortable table.
- Open-Source Mapping and Routing: Use OpenStreetMap (OSM) for geographic data and OpenTripPlanner (OTP) for supported route calculations, supplemented by suitable data sources and pricing rules for transportation modes and costs.
The application's main objective is to answer one practical question: Can you reach a particular destination within your available time and budget?
Cost and time estimates depend on routing coverage, transportation schedules, available fare data, and configured pricing rules. Some modes, such as taxis and rental cars, may require separate cost-estimation logic or external data sources.
